| FIVE BEST THINGS ABOUT THE NBA |

| It is so fashionable to bash the NBA these days. It has gotten to the point where sports fans
have become almost embarrassed to admit that they follow the National Basketball Association. While
I agree that David Stern's authoritarian NBA front office and the attitudes of many spoiled NBA
superstars also hurt my enjoyment of the game, there are at least five things that ensure my support of NBA
basketball.

| SHAQ WEARS SHORT SHORTS |

 Just days after being ridiculed for shooting free throws "like a 10-year-old" by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Shaquille O'Neal is in the news for absurd reasons once again. Yesteday, Shaq, teammate Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Nick Van Exel, Eric Piatkowski and Dana Barros were fined $5,000 each by the National Basketball Association for wearing their shorts too long. Supposedly, NBA players must wear shorts that are at least one inch above the knees. Shaq's initial response to the fine was to state that if he wore short shorts, it would have no impact on the youth of America.
Shaq: Would all the kids then wear John Stockton shorts? No, they wouldn't. They would laugh at me, and I wouldn't be their favorite player any more. I'd be the laughingstock of big men.
It seems that the National Basketball Association has decided to act more like the NFL (No Fun League) and is more concerned about players' shorts than with more important concerns. Don't they have more pressing matters to worry about?

 Scottie Pippen thinks that just because he has six championship rings, thanks primarily to Michael Jordan, he can walk around talking smack about players like Kobe Bryant. It's all good if he can actually back his words up by carrying the Trailblazers to the championship, but when your team gets smacked down and swept right out of the playoffs, then you deserve one of this week's flagrant fouls.

 It's time again to hand out our flagrant fouls again. This week, the offenders are John Croce, Charles Oakley, Pat Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Dennis Rodman, Kobe Bryant and Mike Jordan. Did you really think that we were going to let John Croce get away after pickpocketing Al Iverson and countless other Sixers players? Of course not.

 Duke's Shane Battier really seems like a great all-around guy. He's a scholar of world religions, a gentleman and just a terrific role model. Best of all, he's the most complete college basketball player in the country and a champion. We'd all love Battier if it weren't for Dickie "Dookie" V's constant propaganda and the way the media as a whole bombards us with their Battier lovefest. Unfortunately for Battier, the media's efforts to portray him in the most favorable light has also served to make him look like the geekiest player in the country.
